COACHING

Myles Downey in his book ‘Effective Coaching’ states that coaching is about Potentialand Performance’. His argument is that we all possess the Potential to (a) achieve the goals we set and (b) tackle challenges we face if our Performance is not hindered by ‘Interference’.

Interference is the ‘voice of doubt’ convincing you that you cannot achieve something because you have neither the potential nor performance capability. Using the most basic but effective coaching model called G.R.O.W.’ you can ‘self-coach’ to overcome doubt, confusion and importantly to identify actions with which to go forward.

The acronym G.R.O.W. stands for

  • G = Goal
  • R = Reality
  • O = Options
  • W = Will

Give it a try… Think of a problem or issue that you are having difficulty with or keep avoiding.

1. Identify your Goal. What do you want to achieve?

2. What is the Reality of the situation? Use who, what, why, where, when, how questions.

3. Identify what Options are available to you (identify at least 5 options)

Prioritise the options available and on a scale of 1 to 10, (1 being nil and 10 being totally committed), indicate your level of commitment

5. Do you have the Will to take forward your top 3 options?

If you have answered yes then ‘go for it!’

If you are uncertain then re-consider your options and your goal – and ask yourself whether you really want this and what YOU need to do to get rid of the Interference which is preventing you achieving your Potential and Performance!

Motivation is influenced by two factors Will and Way’. If sufficient reason and commitment exists you will find the Will to motivate yourself and in doing so you will find a Way to do what must be done in order to achieve the desired solution!

Numerous coaching models exist, G.R.O.W. is one simple coaching tool which YOU can use effectively in a range of situations.
